What do these terms mean, and what impact do they have on teaching and learning? Find out at two upcoming workshops, hosted by the Affordable Learning Exchange (ALX), in February and March. These workshops are for anyone who wants to learn how to begin incorporating innovative and affordable course content into their teaching practices.

“Affordable Learning: Getting Started with Open Educational Resources”

Monday, Feb. 20 – 1 p.m.
Innovation Center (Campbell Hall 100)

In this workshop, you will:

  • Learn about some advantages of affordable teaching and learning materials
  • Hear faculty and student perspectives on textbook affordability
  • Find free, open and low-cost options for course materials
  • Learn the basics of Creative Commons licensing
  • Hear from recipients of Affordable Learning Exchange grants and upcoming opportunities

“Affordable Learning: Strategies and Best Practices”

Tuesday, March 28 – 2 p.m.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Examine case studies from past ALX grant winners, demonstrating the innovative integration of OERs and low-cost materials in Ohio State classrooms
  • Explore strategies to effectively use CarmenCanvas and other tools to integrate alternative course materials into your teaching
  • Hear directly from past grant winners and ALX team members about their course transformations
  • Learn about upcoming grant opportunities through ALX

ALX is a cross-campus partnership between University Libraries, the Office of Distance Education and eLearning (ODEE), Undergraduate Student Government, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching. ALX funds and supports transformational course content projects that result in high-impact, sustainable cost savings for students. This happens through adopting, adapting or creating open and affordable course materials in courses of all sizes at Ohio State.
